Time: 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Details: J.S. Bach's Clavier-Ubung III
Monday, February 12, 7:30 p.m.
Christ Church Cathedral, 125 Monument Circle

Marko Petricic, organ and bayan

Modeled after the German Lutheran Mass, the third volume of Johann Sebastian Bach's Clavier-Ubung ("Keyboard Practice") consists of the larger chorale settings that include the pedal, and also the smaller settings that are written for manuals only. The smaller settings have been played on the organ and other keyboard instruments, but never before on the bayan. Since the texture does not call for specific stops and colors on separate solo manuals, these pieces work very well on the bayan, with the added expressive power of the bellows and dynamic nuance.

Through Their Eyes: Health & Integration of Congolese Refugee Women in Indianapolis
Location: Schwitzer Student Center - UIndy Hall C
Time: 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Details: As part of the History & PSCI Department Symposium, Dr. Jyotika Saksena will discuss the persistence of civil-wars and conflicts and what that has meant to a growing population of refugees seeking asylum around the world.
While the UNHCR continues to play a critical role in finding home for refugees it is left to the local authorities and NGOs to help these refugees settle into their new communities. However, diversity of culture and experiences means that integration and assimilation into new societies is not easy. What is needed is not just the perception of what refugees need but rather giving voice to the refugees themselves. Particular focus on placed on issues of health. This project uses "photovoice" methodology to understand the issues surrounding integration and assimilation of Congolese refugees in Indianapolis. Photovoice is an innovative, participatory research method that entails a philosophy of viewing participants as co-researchers. The intent is to engage Congolese refugees in Indiana to assess their perceptions of factors in their community that enhance their experience as refugees and those that present barriers. The researchers partner with Exodus Refugee Inc. in Indianapolis.

Pause, Let Your Soul Catch Up
Location: Schwitzer Student Center - 013
Time: 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Details: Pause? Really? Who has time for that? Feeling overwhelmed? Wondering what ever happened to that sense of joy and peace?

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

While Jesus was here on earth he had a rhythm of work, prayer, and rest. “We find no evidence that Jesus was ever in a rush. In fact, there is more evidence that at times Jesus frustrated his followers because of his lack of hurry. Jesus lived an unhurried and fruitful life. If we are followers of an unhurried Savior, what should our pace of life look like?” Alan Fadling, “An Unhurried life Following Jesus’ Rhythms of Work and Rest”

As we begin the season of Lent, join Cindy Sturgeon, Spiritual Director, to explore ways to pause and let our souls catch up. Learn ways to use our senses of sight, touch, taste, and smell to signal our bodies to pause. Learn to follow an unhurried Savior to live a more fruitful life.

Pause, let your soul catch up #honortheSabbath
