Public Relations Concentration

Public relations uses strategic communication to build and maintain positive relationships with all parties associated with a company or organization. At UIndy, we uphold a proud standard by training you to be a competent member of the PR industry the moment you graduate.

Applied learning with Top Dog Communication

As a PR student, you'll have many opportunities to get involved with Top Dog Communication. Nationwide, more than 100 student-run PR firms are operated by the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), but Top Dog Communication is one of only 34 firms to receive national affiliation. PRSSA also named Top Dog Communication the most “Outstanding Firm” in the nation in 2011 and 2013 (the rules don't allow consecutive wins). Additionally, PR students have won multiple awards at the state level, including Hoosier PRSA "Best of Show" and "Pinnacle" awards. In 2017, our students were awarded to host the PRSA and PRSSA Conference, providing them with invaluable experiential learning.

PR skills

Each semester, local nonprofit companies apply to work with Top Dog Communication, and students are assigned to work on semester-long public relations projects. Your work with local and national clients will give you experience in the many aspects of PR, including:

  • Event planning and promotion
  • Implementing and evaluating PR campaigns
  • Writing press releases, pitch letters, and other print materials
  • Graphic design work
  • Building professional relationships
