UIndy is an Age-Friendly University
The University of Indianapolis was accepted into the Age-Friendly University (AFU) Global Network in 2024. We are proud to be just the second university in Indiana to join this prestigious network of over 110 universities worldwide (and growing) that promotes age-inclusivity and intergenerational understanding. Reflecting UIndy’s mission to champion lifelong learning and its vision to provide education “Anywhere. Anytime. For Life,” this membership confirms our commitment to promoting age-inclusive practices on our campus and prioritizing intergenerational exchange, lifelong learning, and enhanced aging education.
What is an Age-Friendly University?
The Age-Friendly University Global Network recognizes universities committed to promoting an age-inclusive society by supporting older adults as learners, educators, and contributors to their campus communities. Universities in the network pledge to uphold the 10 Age-Friendly University Principles on their campuses, which include priorities related to lifelong and second-career education, research activities, arts and cultural activities, and engagement with the retired community.
Why is This Important?
Age-inclusivity in higher education is more important than ever as the number and proportion of older adults grow in society and around the globe. Improved technology, increased interest in lifelong learning and second careers, and industry demands require universities to be responsive to the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. We believe AFU Global Network membership will allow our students and campus community to benefit in a variety of ways, including:
- Inclusive Learning Environment: It is more important than ever to provide opportunities for older adults to engage with higher education. The AFU Global Network positions us as a leader in creating educational opportunities accessible to learners of all ages and cultivating intergenerational connections within our community.
- Community Impact: This membership strengthens our partnerships with local organizations as we work to support and enrich the lives of older adults in our region.
- Research and Collaborative Opportunities: The AFU Global Network provides a forum for conversations about new research, best practices, and collaborative programming that will help enhance our curricula and support services, ensuring that we remain a vibrant and forward-thinking academic community.
- Enhanced Visibility and Reach: Joining the AFU Global Network enhances our university's visibility and reach as an inclusive, progressive institution that values diversity in all its forms.
How is UIndy Age-Friendly?
UIndy houses a number of activities, groups, and departments that meaningfully engage in age-inclusivity on campus. We will build on those existing strengths over the coming months and years to further enhance our commitment to the 10 AFU Principles. Some current examples include:
- The Center for Aging and Community partners with businesses, community organizations, state agencies, and higher education to enhance the lives of older adults and their families.
- Numerous UIndy academic programs and courses focused on aging, such as degree programs within the department of Interprofessional Health and Aging Studies.
- UIndy Online & Sease Institute meets the needs of online students and lifelong learners with both credit-bearing and non-credit courses and educational opportunities.
- The Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement offers service-learning opportunities and promotes investment in community partnerships
- Countless arts and cultural activities offered by UIndy, including concerts, Lecture Series and the Kellogg Writers Series.
