We are in the midst of one of the most profound revolutions in higher education history. Demographic shifts, disruptive technological innovations, a move to skill-based learning, changing economic models, and global competition are redefining the landscape, and indeed, the future of higher education. At the same time, the need for relevant higher education has never been more urgent because the problems facing our world have not only become more complex but also more interdependent. This rise in complex problems, whether they require understanding how artificial intelligence will affect human-computer interactions or the importance of belonging and diversity in an organization, requires a populace that is well-versed in complex problem solving, creative thinking, and resilience—skills that learners acquire through higher order thinking—a hallmark of higher education.
