A Curriculum for Developing Leaders

During your time at UIndy, your academic journey will encompass an in-depth exploration of foundational concepts such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and Systems Change Theory (SCT) to advance inclusive education for students with exceptional needs. You’ll delve into an array of pivotal subjects essential for effectively executing your role, including the impact of technology in the classroom, the application of neuroscientific research to understand the learning challenges of children, the intersections of financial and legal issues within a diverse educational environment, and the employment of skills needed to engage with the communities you’ll serve.

Your educational experience culminates with an immersive district or school-based internship to hone the skills and competencies required to manage a special education program. Collaborating with a team of faculty and professionals, you will oversee every aspect of a program, from curriculum and policy development to data-driven decision-making and evaluation. By having the opportunity to put theoretical concepts and research methodologies into practical application, you’ll emerge as a seasoned professional poised to create a meaningful and sustained impact.

Earn Advanced Licensure

Completing this program means you not only graduate with your MA in Special Education Leadership & Practice, but you can also continue your education and earn licensure as a Director of Exceptional Needs! Alongside the MA coursework, students interested in licensure take additional courses to more deeply investigate how to educate exceptional children. A practicum gives you firsthand experiences with students with exceptional needs and teaches you how to meet the advanced preparation standards for a special educator. You’ll be prepared to take on a vital leadership role within school systems, leading the way in special education.
