MICI-AHEC Medical Summer Youth Programs

MICI-AHEC offers several summer camps that allow students to explore futures in health careers. Join us for an enriching summer packed full of multiple summer camp opportunities! 

Young Achievers academy

  • Target Audience: High School students interested in health careers, focusing on interactive academic & professional enrichment
  • Program Objective: This camp is for 9th -12th grade students that have an interest in pursuing  health care careers and preparing for the college application process. This is a 4-week immersive experience,  where students will explore a variety of health professions, and see what the requirements, expectations and education looks like to pursue these career. There will be panel discussions, simulations and fun games used to explain and discover more career options.

Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Camp - grades 9th - 12th

  • Target Audience: High School students interested in pursuing a career in physical therapy.
  • Program Objective: This one-week camp is for 9th -12th grade students that have a love for rehabilitation health care. This is an immersive camp, in which we will explore the world of rehabilitation professions, specifically related to PT & OT and see what the requirements, expectations and education looks like to pursue this career. This camp will be held at University of Indianapolis which houses it’s renowned School of Physical Therapy. There will be panel discussions, simulations and fun games used to explain and learn more of this career option.

Camp MD – Grades 9th - 12th 

  • Target Audience: Students interested in a career in medicine or other health careers
  • Program Objectives: This is a week-long camp held at the IU School of Medicine for 9th - 12th graders. This camp is designed for a little more in-depth experience for high school students. In the past, students have been taught how to use an EKG machine, including lessons about electrical conduction, exploring an ambulance, visiting the radiation therapy lab at IU Simon Cancer Center, as well as visiting the pathology lab at the IU Health Pathology building. Since the program is led by students each year, the volunteers may change the curriculum for those students that may participate every year.

Next Gen Dental Academy– College Undergrads

  • Target Audience: Undergraduate Students interested in a career in dentistry
  • Program Objectives: Sponsored by Delta Dental Foundation, the Next Gen Dental Academy is a program committed to diversifying dental careers for the next generation of dental scholars. This 1-week academy will expose minority college students to skill development, academic preparation, networking opportunities and admission information. University professors, graduate students, MICI-AHEC staff and program partners will coordinate to work with students in providing hands-on activities geared toward dentistry.  Faculty from the Indiana University School of Dentistry and one of our Dental partners will present educational materials that reflect cultural diversity and are meaningful to students.This academy will provides career exploration, educational awareness for the importance of diversifying dental careers, mentorship opportunities, and community engagement.

    **Please understand that this academy is 1-week long and does provide housing FREE of charge with a meal plan for all student participants. It is the selected student's responsibility to provide transportation to IU School of Dentistry in Indianapolis Indiana.

SMILE SQUAD DENTAL CAMP – Grades 9th - 12th 

  • Target Audience: High School students interested in a career in dentistry
  • Program Objectives: The MICI-AHEC, IU School of Dentistry and Scotts Dentistry powered by Delta Dental: Dental Camp is a program committed to diversifying dental careers for the next generation of dental scholars. This 1-week academy will expose minority high school students to skill development, academic preparation, networking opportunities and admission information. University professors, graduate students, MICI-AHEC staff and program partners will coordinate to work with students in providing hands-on activities geared toward dentistry.  Faculty from the Indiana University School of Dentistry and one of our Dental partners will present educational materials that reflect cultural diversity and are meaningful to students.

Doctors Camp – Grades 5th - 8th 

  • Target Audience: Middle school students interested in a career in medicine or other health fields.
  • Program Objectives: This week-long camp is held at the IU School of Medicine for 5th - 8th graders. This camp is led by IUSM student volunteers. The camp is designed to increase the knowledge of the medical profession, foster an awareness of disease health careers, facilitate an interest in healthcare careers, encourage college attendance, provide opportunities for college preparedness activities and provide exposure to the health profession.

health careers enrichment – Grades 9TH - 12TH

  • Target Audience: High school students interested in a variety of health professions such as nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and kinesiology.
  • Program Objectives: This camp is for 9th - 12th grade students who are ready to learn about a variety of health careers because their options are open! The primary focus is to increase knowledge of a variety of healthcare fields through panel discussions, lab simulations, degree requirements and expectations for the different careers, how to know which health careers are right for them, demonstrate the practical application of scientific principles, and provide opportunities for unique and fun health-science activities.
