Summer Programs
Burmese American Community Institute (BACI)
The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) Upward College Program is a year-long engagement for Burmese high school students that prepares them for success in higher education. This is achieved through a variety of essential components, culminating in the Summer Scholars program, hosted by the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement on UIndy’s campus every year.
The culmination of the Upward College Program is a presentation of the participants’ scholarly work to a diverse audience from the Burmese community, higher education institutions, and agencies from the community. The Center’s staff is honored to both host the final part of the students’ journey and to attend the scholarship conference that showcases their hard work.
TeenWorks
The mission of TeenWorks is “...to empower teens to achieve excellence in college, career, and community.” The program provides paid employment to high school students. Not only do the students receive compensation, they are taught professionalism and job skills, and learn about the value of community engagement. Each summer, the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement hosts a group of their students on UIndy’s campus for their “summer training program.
While here, the students spend part of their time working on a project designed by UIndy’s physical plant leadership, and the rest of their time preparing for essential college- and employment-readiness topics. TeenWorks is a part of the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Family Foundation, which provides six scholarships each year to students who successfully complete the program.
