About the Master of Public Health Program

The Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the University of Indianapolis is a professional degree program with a concentration in health disparities – preventable differences in the health of various populations. Centered on the core public health values of community collaboration and social justice, UIndy's MPH program intentionally combines academic preparation in current public health knowledge with planned, community-based projects embedded throughout coursework, plus an intensive professional practice experience.

Program Length & Format

The UIndy MPH degree is a 42-credit program designed to be completed in two years, including the summer. For those needing more flexibility, alternate schedules for three- or four-year program completion are available. UIndy’s MPH classes are offered 100% online with occasional synchronous sessions. This makes UIndy's MPH degree accessible to students regardless of where they live and work.

Curriculum

UIndy's unique curriculum provides MPH students the ability to practice essential skills for improving population health such as program planning, monitoring and evaluation, grant writing, culturally competent communication, advocacy, and leadership for improvement of public health. It was designed to provide foundational and practical knowledge, skills and abilities to apply an ecological approach to promoting health and health equity for communities worldwide.

Professional Practice Experience & Capstone

Each graduate student will complete a Professional Practice Experience and related Capstone. The purpose of this experience is to provide an opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills of public health competencies acquired through their core and concentration curriculum in an intensive field-based practicum, and to design and deliver four distinct products in conjunction with their field practicum as their culminating experience for the MPH program.

The Professional Practice Experience and Capstone can be completed in or near the communities where students live and work. In addition, flexible scheduling is often available so working students can maintain their jobs outside of the required professional practice experience.

Criminal Background Check

In order to protect future patients/clients and sites, internship and practicum students may be required to have criminal background checks prior to being accepted at a specific site placement. In some circumstances, this process may be required to meet professional licensure requirements. A criminal history may affect placement and/or licensure, and in some cases, disqualify a student from a specific placement.

Health requirements are tracked throughout the program in order to ensure students remain in compliance with internship, practicum, and/or site requirements. Proof of immunity and/or vaccinations may be required. Additionally, some students may be required to have a physical exam completed by a primary health provider, as well as, proof of health insurance prior to acceptance for certain site placements.
