Umoja Scholars Living-Learning Community (LLC)

Named after the Swahili word for “unity,” the Umoja Scholars LLC aims to cultivate a sense of belonging for first-year students who identify as Black, African-American, or within the African diaspora at the University of Indianapolis. The Umoja Scholars LLC space on campus is designed to encourage students to come together, grow in their own identities, engage with upperclassmen student mentors, connect with academic advising and resources around campus, and learn about the diversity of the diaspora.

Students who are accepted into the Umoja Scholars LLC will live in Cory Bretz Hall on UIndy’s campus and be paired with roommates who are also members of the Umoja Scholars LLC.

Why an LLC?

Research has consistently shown that students who participate in a Living-Learning Community experience a higher level of success both socially and academically as compared to those who are not part of an LLC.

Student Responsibilities

Students participating in the Umoja LLC will maintain the following requirements:

• Remain enrolled in LLC-related courses each semester
• Remain in good social conduct standing with the university 
• Participate in LLC-related activities throughout the academic year
