Your Story Matters: How to Talk to Your Legislator About Aging Issues
Every year, Indiana lawmakers make decisions that shape how we age: who can get care at home, how family caregivers are supported, and whether enough workers are available. Too often, they make those decisions without hearing from the people who live with the results.
That isn’t because legislators don’t care. It’s because most of us assume advocacy is something professionals do. However, some of the most persuasive voices at the Statehouse belong to caregivers, older adults, students, and frontline workers who took ten minutes to share what they’ve seen.
You don’t need to be an expert to share your voice. Your own experience is enough to get started, and it’s easier than you might think.
1. Find your legislators
Everyone in Indiana has one state senator and one state representative. Click “Find Your Legislator” and enter your registered voting address at iga.in.gov to find them.
2. Share your story
Lawmakers remember stories more than statistics. Keep it simple:
- Who you are: “I live in Indianapolis and care for my dad.”
- What happened: “It took months to find help at home.”
- What you’re asking: “Please support faster access to home care.”
Stick to one issue and one ask.
3. Reach out your way
- Email is the easiest place to start. Include your address so they know you’re a constituent.
- Call their office. You’ll likely talk with a staff member, and that’s fine. They pass messages along.
- Meet in person if you’re comfortable. Even 15 minutes can make a lasting impression.
4. Follow up
Send a quick thank-you. If an issue comes up later, reach out again. Over time, you become someone their office knows and listens to.
When to reach out
Indiana’s legislative session starts each January, so Fall is a great time to connect, before bills are filed and schedules fill up. That said, any time is a good time to share your story.
Look up your legislators this week and send a few sentences about the aging issue you care about most. That’s it; that’s advocacy!
