Christel DeHaan (1942-2020)

The University of Indianapolis community mourns the loss of Christel DeHaan, a pivotal civic and philanthropic leader and long-serving Board of Trustees member. Christel was a true friend to the University and was instrumental in leading UIndy to the status of a nationally-ranked institution. 

Christel served on the University Board of Trustees from 1990 to 2008. During her tenure, she also served as Board Chair and earned an honorary doctorate degree from the University in 1993. The University is grateful for her immeasurable impact on our institution and the broader community.

Her love for music and the arts was manifested through her generous gift to establish the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, which was the largest single contribution at that time in University history. The award-winning structure was built in 1994 and houses the two-tiered Ruth Lilly Performance Hall, an art gallery, practice rooms, art studios, classrooms, and a lecture hall with state-of-the-art learning technology. 

Her charitable contributions also established the DeHaan School of Education Quasi Endowment and the DeHaan Chair for the Center for Aging & Community at the University of Indianapolis. Christel's influence on campus was widespread, ranging from the beautification of Smith Mall to support for the creation of the Indianapolis Quartet. Through all of these programs, experiences, and physical enhancements, Christel has had a positive impact on the life chances of so many of our students, faculty, and staff. 

In 1998, she founded Christel House International, a charity that builds educational and social programs for children all over the world. The Christel House Academy, which opened in 2010, is located just two miles north of the UIndy campus.  The University continues to partner with the school providing dual credit and scholarship opportunities for its students and graduates.

Christel was a constant reminder of the importance of engaging with others and using our abilities to serve. Her inspirational legacy will continue to live on through the countless opportunities provided to students within the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. 

She was one of the great connectors of our city, community, and society. We will long remember with gratitude Christel's passionate advocacy for the arts, her visionary leadership, and her philanthropic work on behalf of her community, city, and the world.

Anne Thomas (1961-2019)

The University of Indianapolis was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Anne Thomas, immediate past dean of the University of Indianapolis School of Nursing.

Thomas created a legacy of caring and compassion throughout her career and her life. Through her outstanding leadership of the School of Nursing, she contributed significantly to the growth of the School's nationally recognized reputation. She oversaw the launch of several new degree programs, including the accelerated BSN program and the doctoral program in nursing.

Thomas joined the School of Nursing in 1997 as a part-time instructor and became full-time faculty in 2008, when she also assumed the role of graduate programs director. She served in the School of Nursing dean role from 2009 to 2016. Thomas's optimism shone through every aspect of her life and impacted many of her colleagues at the University. As an adult/gerontological nurse practitioner, Thomas worked in rural primary care as well as occupational and mental health care settings, and she received several awards for her work in developing and implementing nurse-managed clinics. She also held academic leadership positions at the University of Texas at Arlington, Indiana State University, and the University of Michigan.

Thomas's leadership roles within national health organizations reflected her broad expertise in the field. She served as a research director at the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute for Nursing Research. In 2012, she was inducted into the Fellows of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Thomas served as president of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, a global network of educators devoted to promoting quality nurse practitioner education.

Maestro Raymond Leppard (1927-2019)

The University of Indianapolis mourns the loss of Maestro Raymond Leppard, one of the most respected international conductors of our time and artist-in-residence at the University of Indianapolis.

Maestro Leppard spent 25 seasons as the University of Indianapolis artist-in-residence. He received an honorary degree from the University in 1991 and an honorary alumni award in 2014. During his career at the University of Indianapolis, he conducted ensembles and held performances that showcased his talents as a pianist, harpsichordist, lecturer, composer, and arranger. In 2017, the University celebrated Maestro Leppard's 90th birthday with a special on-campus performance before a standing-room-only audience.

The Conductor Laureate of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Leppard appeared with nearly all the world's leading orchestras in more than 60 years on the podium, conducting more than 170 recordings and earning five Grammy Awards, among many other accomplishments.

"The University of Indianapolis Department of Music was privileged to collaborate with Maestro Leppard for a quarter-century, and generations of students died as well as faculty and the University community died were touched and inspired through the generosity of Maestro Leppard's contributions," said Elisabeth Honn Hoegberg, associate professor and chair of the University of Indianapolis Department of Music.

"Maestro Leppard's popular opening concerts at Ruth Lilly Performance Hall often featured a substantial work for choir, soloists and orchestra such as the Schubert G-Major Mass (one of his personal favorites), Mozart Vespers, or Haydn St. Nicholas Mass," said Richard Ratliff, professor of music.

"Raymond grew very fond of his annual evenings on Hanna Avenue (as he called them) in recent years."

During his concert in September 2018, Maestro Leppard led a memorable performance of his new song cycle "Summoned for Love" and a touching "Ave verum corpus" of Mozart to conclude, followed by a prolonged ovation.

Richard G. Lugar (April 4, 1932 died April 28, 2019)

The University of Indianapolis mourns the loss of Senator Richard G. Lugar, whose long and impactful relationship with the University created a lasting legacy.

Senator Lugar served as a member of the University Board of Trustees from 1970 to 2002, and through his work with the Richard G. Lugar Academy also shaped the youth of Indiana by personally mentoring more than 20,000 young Hoosier leaders over the past 42 years through the Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow's Leaders at the University of Indianapolis.

Senator Lugar's two terms as Indianapolis mayor are documented in the University's Institute for Civic Leadership & Mayoral Archives. In many ways, these records will ensure that his leadership style, approach to public service and impact will be remembered.

Senator Lugar's life example served as a model for our students. He was a constant reminder that all individual talents should accrue to the benefits of others, and he believed that civic engagement was a cornerstone of a meaningful life and the bedrock of a civil society.

Dr. Gene E. Sease, the University's fifth president, recalled election night in 1976 when Lugar was elected to the U.S. Senate for the first time. Lugar was teaching full-time for the University that year while campaigning.

"The next morning he met his class and all of the media were there. He responded to their questions for a few minutes and watched the clock. When it was 8 a.m., he said, ‘now, if all of you who are not students will be excused, I'll begin my lecture,'" Dr. Sease said. "He never missed a class."

Whether as faculty, board member, special lecturer or graduation speaker, he was a beacon to our community and will be missed.

The University will long remember with gratitude Senator Lugar's passionate advocacy for public service, his visionary leadership and work on behalf of regional, national and global initiatives, and his love for the people in the great state of Indiana.

• Clarena E. Huffington '41 passed away July 28, 2018. She was a teacher of English for more than 34 years and taught at Arsenal Technical High School and Arlington High School, where she was head of the English department. Clarena was a member of Meridian Street United Methodist Church.
• Dr. Robert L. "Bob" Frey '60 passed away June 28, 2018. He served over 40 years in college teaching and administration and authored, co-authored or edited eight books, numerous articles and many presentations. After retirement, he became interested in the history of the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church and served for many years on the Advisory Council for the EUB Heritage Center at United Theological Seminary.
• Dr. Stephen Anthony Graham passed away February 7, 2018. Dr. Graham was a UIndy history and political science faculty member and was named the 1992 "Teacher of the Year." While at the University, he authored several books on the world-famous 20th century missionary-evangelist Dr. E. Stanley Jones. Dr. Graham retired in 2009 after serving on the UIndy faculty for 25 years.
• Mary L. "Wimp" Baumgartner '57 passed away June 2, 2018. Mary played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and was named to the 1953 all-star team. She taught and coached at Jimtown High School in Elkhart, IN, from 1957 to 1969, then at Leo High School in Leo, IN, from 1969 until her retirement in 1985. She was inducted into the UIndy Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 and the softball field was named after her in 2012.
• Donald Everet Ray '50 passed away December 19, 2018. Don began his career at L.S. Ayres before being drafted into the Army, where he served as a psychologist. He returned to Ayres after his service duty. His career flourished, becoming Vice President of Stores in 1971. Later, the Ayres family sold the store to Associated Dry Goods, which sent him to Baltimore to run Stewart & Co. in 1978, then in 1982 he went to St. Louis to head Stix, Baer & Fuller. He ended his career with Sibley's of New York in Rochester. Don was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash and was also commissioned a Kentucky colonel. Don's family, above all, was the most important part of his life.
• Joseph D. "Joe" Cathcart '84 passed away September 30, 2018. Joseph worked at F.A. Wilhelm Construction since 1996 as the chief financial officer. He was involved in his community including Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Scecina Memorial High School, the University of Indianapolis, Big Brothers Big Sisters, College Mentor for Kids, and the Catholic Youth Organization, where he coached youth football for 20 years.
• Dr. Kathleen Koval passed away November 10, 2018. Dr. Koval was a faculty member of the UIndy School of Nursing from 1987 until her retirement in 2010. In 1996, the University opened the Koval Center, an on-campus clinic that provided services such as immunizations and health screenings to UIndy employees. Dr. Koval was instrumental in the development of the center, which also continues to play an important role in training nursing students through real clinical experiences.
