Background

While a graduate student at Indiana University, I studied stereotype threat and attitude change. For two years as a postdoc at IU, I implemented large-scale social psychological interventions at several universities to improve the well-being and achievement of their students. I hope to continue these efforts at UIndy.

Background

My research interests concern stereotyping and prejudice with an emphasis on prejudice reduction. Across numerous programs of research, I have studied various prejudice reduction strategies such as bias reduction training, interpersonal confrontation, and educational interventions.

Background

Dr. Poulakis was born in Greece and immigrated to the United States in 1992. He received his PsyD from the University of Indianapolis in 2002 and has been teaching at UIndy since 2005. Dr. Poulakis teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Favorite thing about UIndy

I love that I am able to mentor my students, help them live better lives, and be part of their commencement. In a rather philosophical way I am honoring my ancient ancestors through my mentorship to students.

Areas of Expertise

clinical psychology

Background

I worked at the Department of Justice for two years on public health litigation. This experience helped cultivate my interest in clinical psychology, which I pursued in my graduate work at the University of Minnesota. I joined UIndy after finishing my internship at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Research Interests

I am interested in factors that influence the public's conceptualization of substance use problems and mental health issues. Some of the factors that I am interested in examining include causal beliefs, personal familiarity with addiction or mental health issues, and demographic characteristics. My research with students examines how these factors influence public stigma and beliefs about different treatment methods.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Developmental Psychology and Cultural Psychology

BACKGROUND

While I was a graduate student, I had the opportunity to collect data on children’s peer relationships in both China and the United States. I became interested in children’s emotional and social competence from a sociocultural perspective.

I came to the United States as an international student in 2012, received my PhD in 2018, and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Georgia and Massachusetts before teaching at UIndy in 2022.

  • Quantitative methodology (e.g., social network analysis)
  • Qualitative methodology (e.g., interpretative phenomenological analysis)
