Aging Speaker Series: The Importance of Laughter with Julie Gahimer
The Aging Speaker Series recently welcomed an energizing and inspiring session led by University of Indianapolis professor Julie Gahimer. Julie’s session focused on a powerful and often overlooked tool for healthy aging: laughter.

In a world that often emphasizes the challenges of growing older, this session served as a refreshing reminder that aging is also an adventure filled with joy and connection. Julie highlighted how simple, intentional practices can have profound and lasting benefits.
The Science Behind Laughter and Well-Being
The session began by exploring the research behind why laughter and social connection are essential components of well-being, particularly in older adulthood. Drawing from positive psychology and neuroscience, Julie shared evidence-based insights into how joy impacts the brain and body.
Participants learned that laughter isn’t just a momentary mood booster - it can:
- Improve cognitive function
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Strengthen social bonds
- Increase resilience
- Support overall emotional health
Julie introduced laughter and awe as practical, research-supported approaches to enhancing well-being:
Laughter Yoga
Attendees experienced guided laughter yoga techniques designed to stimulate genuine laughter, even when it starts as intentional practice. These exercises demonstrated that laughter, whether spontaneous or structured, yields both physiological and psychological benefits.
Awe Practices
Participants explored the power of awe: those moments of wonder inspired by nature, art, music, or meaningful human connection. Julie explained how cultivating awe can expand perspective, enhance gratitude, and promote cognitive vitality.

A Much-Needed Reminder
The session was more than informative - it was restorative. In a time when stress and uncertainty can feel overwhelming, attendees left with practical tools and renewed perspective.
Aging is not simply a process of growing older; it is an evolving journey rich with opportunity. With intention, laughter, and connection, it can be a chapter marked by vitality, resilience, and deep fulfillment.
We are grateful to Julie for leading such a meaningful conversation and to everyone who joined us for this uplifting Aging Speaker Series event.
