History Dual Degree 4+1 Program
Master your Passion for HistoryThe Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in History Dual Degree 4+1 program at the University of Indianapolis (UIndy) offers students the opportunity to complete the requirements for both the bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in History within five years.
About the History Dual Degree 4+1 Program
Students will follow a sequence of courses for both the general education core and History while taking additional graduate courses during the senior year.
How the BA/MA History 4+1 Works
- Years 1-3: Complete most History major and general education requirements.
- Year 4:
- First Semester: Complete most History major and general education requirements.
- Second Semester: Begin graduate-level History coursework while completing the bachelor's degree.
- Year 5: Complete the remaining graduate requirements and earn the MA in History.
Note: All graduate courses are offered in the evenings and therefore do not clash with the undergraduate course schedule.
Accelerated Curriculum
Students will be required to follow a course of study that includes taking graduate and undergraduate courses concurrently, but only in the second semester of senior year as approved by the Program Director. Students are required to consult their academic advisor prior to registering for any course. A proper sequence of courses is required for students to complete the two degrees in the five-year time frame.
Students should schedule undergraduate major and general education core during the first three academic years, and plan to save electives until their senior year.
No undergraduate History courses are double-counted as graduate History courses. Students pursuing the thesis track of the MA degree are exempted from HIST589 (Thesis Proposal) if their MA thesis builds upon their HIST475 capstone paper.

Admission Requirements
Students interested in the 4+1 should apply no later than May of their junior year with a major in History*. Applicants must have a 3.0 grade-point average to be eligible for early admission. Students will be admitted conditionally to the History graduate program subject to maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average through completion of the bachelor’s degree.
*Undergraduate majors outside of History will still be considered for an accelerated MA in History. There may be additional courses to ensure understanding of undergraduate History.
Tuition, Fees and Aid
All courses taken prior to completion of the bachelor’s degree will be billed at the undergraduate tuition rate. Summer graduate courses will be billed at the graduate tuition rate. All courses taken after completion of the bachelor’s degree will be billed at the graduate tuition rate.
Any merit and talent scholarships earned, as well as any undergraduate financial aid awarded based upon filing the FAFSA, will be applicable during the fourth year of the 4+1 History program as long as the student meets the following conditions: (1) maintains registration as an undergraduate student, (2) takes at least 6 credits of undergraduate coursework in the second semester of the senior year, and (3) has not yet completed the bachelor’s degree.
Prior to the start of the first graduate summer semester, students will work with the Office of Financial Aid to update their current year FAFSA to reflect graduate program status. This revision will allow graduate aid to be processed.
