Alumni Testimonials

"The UIndy History Department has played a vital role in shaping my love for history, research, and analysis. Their dedication to nurturing a new generation of historians ensures that the passion for historical research does not end at commencement but equips students with the skill sets needed to be effective and active participants in the historical realm. The faculty’s guidance extends beyond simply ensuring I obtain a degree; it has helped me discover my place in the historical world and ensure that my role in preserving the voices of those who are silenced will be a successful endeavor. Their commitment to nurturing curiosity, research, and critical thinking has been crucial in my role as a historian and as a person. I am deeply grateful for the lasting impact the department has had on my academic and personal growth."

"UIndy helped prepare me for professional school to where I can hold my own and succeed alongside Ivy League and Stanford graduates."

"I always felt listened to and respected. I never feared asking a question or voicing the ideas I had, and I always knew there was someone I could go to. When I left the department, I had this backing of knowing how to advocate for myself and my own education, which I've found to be a vital skill."

"Being a History major at UIndy, I learned skills that have been instrumental in my success as a law student. The professors are phenomenal at teaching various methods to analyze problems, argument development, and how to read with purpose. All of these skills are valuable and highly transferable to any profession."

I teach to empower students as individuals. Studying the past and seeing how people made choices in the context of their time and place allows us to think about ourselves as historical actors and, perhaps, make better choices in our own context. Learning to think historically and analytically and to write and communicate ideas helps students develop their skills and prepare themselves for their future career and for citizenship.
