Clinical Services
Student-Centered, Campus-Driven—We are here for You!
The UIndy Student Counseling Center offers a variety of services and delivery methods customized to our diverse student population and our campus needs. We are committed to utilizing assessment and feedback regarding those needs to continuously develop mental health programming and delivery methods most conducive to UIndy student wellness.
Student Counseling Center Service Model

The first step to begin services with the UIndy Student Counseling Center is to schedule a brief screening. Our goal with using these brief screening appointments is to be able to address your concerns and needs more quickly and to connect you with the most appropriate and available services to optimize your well-being, health, and success. Near the end of the screening, we can provide you with clinical recommendations tailored to your needs, which may be a referral to groups and workshops, a targeted single session, an initial consultation or intake to gather more information, or a referral to other UIndy or community resources.
About Our Services
Have something on your mind and not sure what to do next? Chat With a Counselor offers short, informal conversations with a counselor about a specific concern you’re dealing with right now.
These conversations focus on immediate concerns, practical problem-solving, and coping strategies you can use right away.
Meet with a counselor at scheduled times and locations across campus — outside of the Counseling Center. You can attend on your own (drop-in), or through a referral from a campus staff or faculty member.

During the Brief Screening or Initial Consultation, your clinician may suggest a single session of treatment with a potential follow-up if you indicate that you are seeking support or guidance for a very specific problem. You can expect in this session, a solution-focused approach to assisting you in identifying and practicing skills in addressing the identified issue. If more sessions beyond the single session and follow-up are needed, your clinician and you will discuss the various resources we offer.
Each semester, we have several mental health topical workshops, support groups, and interpersonal therapy groups that will be discussed with you during your Initial Consultation to determine if registering for one or more of them is recommended for your personal treatment plan. Students do not have to be engaged in our counseling services to attend our skills-based workshops or support groups. Please see the Groups & Workshop section of our website for current offerings.
All students are eligible for free mental health services provided by our center, including a personalized consultation with one of our clinicians to determine which of our many resources is best for your current concerns. You will be asked to provide pre-consultation paperwork that assists the clinician in preparing for your meeting together and will inform the decisions you make together in your treatment options.
In your Brief Screening or Initial Consultation, your clinician may recommend more traditional brief therapy in which biweekly individual counseling is provided based on your particular mental health needs. During your treatment, your clinician and you will continue to assess when/if a referral or transition to any of our groups or workshops, or an internal or external referral to the community is best for your continued personal growth.
We are available to assist you in your relationship conflicts and will work with you to develop healthy relationship goals, or, provide guidance and support in making decisions about if/when it might be appropriate to separate or to seek individual counseling. This service is available to all students; however, both individuals must be UIndy students for ongoing partner counseling. Requests to bring a non-UIndy partner into a student’s existing counseling session must be requested in advance of the scheduled appointment.
We are available during business hours for crisis appointments and walk-ins. No appointment is necessary. When you arrive to our lobby, you will be assessed using a crisis triage form and brief consultation to determine next steps, including possibly being assigned to a clinician immediately for further treatment and a safety risk assessment. Please see below for more information on our crisis services.
The UIndy Student Counseling Center offers a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide an immersive, evidence-based wellness experience. The Paws & Reflect Biofeedback & Meditation Center is a first-of-its-kind offering among university student counseling centers! It features heated lava rock beds, virtual and in-person biofeedback training, meditation stations, and an additional private room for one-on-one biofeedback and meditation sessions, as well as massage chair use.
This pioneering initiative is made possible through a visionary partnership with UIndy’s R.B. Annis School of Engineering (DesignSpine project) and generous support from OneAmerica Financial, Urban Meditation, LLC, and Phylis Lan Lin, Professor Emerita, University of Indianapolis.
Also, special thanks to the Krannert School of Physical Therapy and Department of Occupational Therapy, whose student class projects helped with furniture and layout of the center.

Please contact us directly during business hours to let us know that you are coming in immediately, or you can always walk-in for a triage appointment. At that time, our Assistant Director of Clinical Operations, or a clinician, will assess your situation when you arrive, and if needed, assign you to see a clinician within the same visit.
We do not monitor our office phone, individual emails or our counseling center scheduling email outside of business hours. If you have an emergency or urgent need, do not leave any messages. Contact 911 or one of the other support or emergency numbers we have listed here on our website.

What happens for a brief screening
- A clinician will send you a Google Meet link at some point prior to the scheduled appointment time. They will use the email address that you provided when scheduling the appointment.
- If you have not received an email with the link by 5 minutes after your scheduled time or the clinician had not logged into the virtual meeting yet, feel free to call our office at 317-788-5015. If you do not log into the meeting within 10 minutes after your scheduled time, you will need to reach out to schedule another time as we will not re-contact you.
- During your appointment, please log into the virtual session from a private, confidential space. The screening will last approximately 25-30 minutes.
- What to expect:
- The brief screening appointment begins with the clinician gathering information about you and asking some questions to clarify your concerns and to assess the risk level and severity of your situation. The questions may be of a sensitive nature. It’s important for you to share as much as you can so we can provide you with clinical recommendations tailored to your needs.
- Your needs may be met by problem solving and coming to a resolution during this brief screening.
- The clinician may also recommend other options or next steps which will be discussed at the end of the screening. These options may include a group or workshop referral, a single session consultation, an initial consultation to gather additional information, or a referral to a UIndy or a community resource that is a better fit than the counseling center.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
If you cannot find a time online, please contact the office either by phone or email to schedule an appointment or check back online at a later time as times are updated throughout the week.
The counseling center provides crisis walk-in appointments during our regular business hours. These consultations are focused on stabilizing the current crisis/emergency and providing immediate support to the student will assisting them in linking to our services.
TimelyCare is also available to students 24/7 for free virtual, on-demand emotional support through either a mobile app or your desktop.
If you are needing urgent services after hours, please contact 911 or one of the other support or emergency numbers we have listed here on our website.
If you have a particular request before being assigned a clinician, please let us know. Although we cannot always fulfill your request, we do try to honor this request and the wait time for an appointment may be longer.
If you feel that you are not connecting with your current clinician, we strongly encourage you to first talk to your clinician directly about your concerns. If you are uncomfortable with talking with your clinician directly, please reach out to our office for support.
For all requests, please share the name of your current clinician, the reason for your request, and what you are hoping to achieve. This information is helpful to know what you are needing in a treatment relationship with another clinician. Some Important Considerations
Please note that while all students are eligible for our services, if you are a student who is not on campus or currently residing in the state of Indiana (including those in fully on-line degree programs who are living in another state), we cannot provide some of our services due to state licensing laws and restrictions (i.e., including therapy-based individual or interpersonal processing groups).
We can provide our other resources for students not living in Indiana including skills-based (non-therapy) on-line workshops and support groups, topical mental health presentations for LP credit, and professor or department invited discussions on mental health topics dependent on scheduling availability. Additionally, we offer non-therapy consultations and referral sessions regardless of a student’s physical location.
TimelyCare is available to all students regardless of which state they currently reside in. TalkNow services are available 24/7, on-demand through their mobile app or website at no additional cost.
A hosted on-line search tool, MiResource, is available free to all students, faculty, and staff to assist in finding a community provider, regardless of location of residence. Providers are members of MiResource and will have different rates, specialty areas, and acceptances of insurance that you can customize for your own needs. This service is not affiliated with the UIndy Counseling Center’s resources and is vetted and approved by MiResource.
While we offer treatment for a variety of psychological concerns, we do not offer treatment for all emotional or psychological disorders, particularly those that require more intensive treatment beyond our brief model of treatment. This includes those issues that are chronic, severe, or involving a high and consistent risk of harm to self or others. We also cannot provide the frequency of sessions and treatment necessary for severe personality and psychotic disorders and severe substance abuse or recovery. Practicing within the scope of the model of services we can offer, we will refer out to the community for any long-term treatment or specialized areas of service required.
We do not assess for emotional support animals (ESAs) and do not provide or sign any documentation documenting a need for an ESA or a request for a letter of support. While many of our clinicians themselves are pet owners and understand the comfort and support animals can offer, we are not able to provide or endorse this type of documentation. If you are a resident on campus, we recommend that you contact the Disability Resources & Build office for the requirements and guidelines you will need to follow in seeking approval for an ESA.
Crisis Services
We offer crisis services between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. ET. on weekdays. We are closed for lunch from closed 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and for university holidays and breaks.
Definition of a crisis
A crisis is when an individual is in immediate need of mental health assistance due experiencing any of the following:
- You are planning on seriously injuring or killing yourself or someone else
- You are hearing voices and/or seeing things that others do not
- Someone is abusing, assaulting, and/or seriously threatening to abuse or assault you or someone else
If your concern does not meet the definition of a crisis but you are in high distress, we will do our best to schedule you to be seen within the next one or two business days. While you wait, we encourage you to utilize the self-help resources on our website, take care of yourself by prioritizing sleep, healthy eating, and exercise, and reach out to supportive people.
Please call 317-788-5015 or walk in to the Student Counseling Center and inform our staff of your need for a crisis appointment. You may be asked to complete a crisis triage questionnaire to help us determine next steps.
Please note that some situations may require the clinician to share information with others in order to ensure your safety or the safety of others. Please refer to our Confidentiality Policy for more information.
How to Access Help After Hours
Students can seek help for a crisis after hours through any of the following methods:
- TimelyCare 24/7, on-demand emotional support.
- Contact residence life staff or campus police
- Call or text a 24/7 crisis helpline
- Go to the nearest hospital emergency room or call 911
Residence life staff and campus police are trained to help students gain access to service in the event of an "after hours" crisis. It is not uncommon for several members of the University community to work together to assist students in getting the help they need.
If you are a faculty or staff member seeking assistance for a student who is in crisis after hours, please contact campus police immediately and directly at 911 for ANY safety concerns. The Student Counseling Center phone and email are not monitored 24/7 and should not be utilized in these circumstances.
