Care and Safety

Grady’s physical and mental well-being are priorities for the University of Indianapolis. We follow the care and safety standards set forth by Greyhound Pets of America, Indianapolis Chapter.

Grady has access to fresh water and receives high-quality meals at regular intervals, along with the veterinarian-recommended daily exercise and grooming. Grady has a deluxe dog bed in his campus office where he can rest quietly during the day, and he also has a large fenced-in yard to run and play in each night.

Grady’s public appearances are carefully planned to facilitate interaction with the public in a manner that benefits everyone. His safety is always top of mind, and he is kept clear of athletic activity when attending sporting events. He’s also always kept on a leash when in public spaces, as greyhounds are known to reach high speeds in several strides.

If you see Grady on campus, please follow these basic guidelines for approaching a dog:

  1. Walk toward Grady, never run or rush toward him.
  2. Ask Grady’s handler if it’s okay to pet him.

  3. Avoid crouching over him.

  4. Keep your body loose and relaxed.

  5. Speak in a calm, reassuring tone.

  6. Let Grady sniff your hand if he wants to, then gently pet him. Please be gentle with his ears where he has tattoos from his racing days.
