Sociology

Because you want to be part of the solution

Despite our differences, most people have common desires- to get along with others, to be treated equally, and to have fulfilling lives. As a sociology major, you will use scientific methods to study societies and social groups, uncovering how we relate to one another and how we can make peoples’ lives better. By developing strong research and evaluation skills, you'll be prepared for most any kind of leadership position, whether in the for-profit or nonprofit realm. And you'll also be ready to make a difference in the world by creating more equitable communities.

Joshua Ford
Sociology

Sociology has given me a broad knowledge of the way society and its institutions work and has allowed me to connect seriously to my community. I have gained skills in working with not-for-profit organizations. Those skills involve organizing large-scale projects and volunteer recruitment. I have also been able to focus on diverse community groups, identifying needs and assessing accommodations.

Child & Youth Programs

This interdisciplinary program provides courses and field-based experiences so you’re prepared to work in programs that educate and mentor children and youth outside school settings. This Child & Youth Programs Minor can be added to any major, and it is well-suited to sociology majors who hope to work with children.

Community Inequality & Change

This minor prepares you to reduce inequality, bring about social change and improve various aspects of your local, national, and global communities. The Community Inequality & Change Minor can be added to any major, and it is well-suited to sociology majors.

Social Research Concentration

Adding the social research concentration lets you build additional research skills. If you plan to go on to graduate school or want a job focused on research, this is an excellent concentration for you.
