Community Inequality & Change Minor 

This minor gives you many opportunities to connect classroom studies with service-oriented learning experiences, helping you develop your community-leadership skills at the same time. You’ll be prepared to bring members of an area together in order to reduce inequality, bring about social change and improve various aspects of your local, national, and global communities.

Who Should Minor in Community Inequality & Change? 

The Community Inequality & Change minor (CIC minor) is open to all students. Given its focus on recognizing inequalities in society and communities, identifying structural explanations for these inequalities, and working to reduce these inequalities via social change, the minor is suited for students from a range of majors including, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Political Science, History, International Relations, Philosophy, Religion, Environmental Sustainability, and many more. Learning the implications of assumptions and expectations around inequalities - especially in communities, and how to overcome them, can benefit you in many work settings, including business and management, social work, law, non-for-profit agencies, education, healthcare, and more. 

Curriculum Guide 

The Community Inequality & Change minor is 18 credit hours. Students take 3 required courses (SOC 210, SOC 315, and either SOC 220 OR SOC 250), as well as 9 credits of electives.

    • SOC 220 Racial and Ethnic Relations (3) OR SOC 250 Gender Issues in Law and Society (3)
    • SOC 210 Social Inequality (3)
    • SOC 315 Cities and Communities (3)
  • Elective options (complete at least 3 of the following) 
    • SOC 150 Community Learning and Serving (3) OR CSL 150 Introduction to Community Service Learning
    • SOC 220 Racial and Ethnic Relations (3) (if not taken as requirement) 
    • SOC 250 Gender Issues in Law and Society (3) (if not taken as requirement)
    • SOC 240 Conflict Resolution (3)
    • SOC 305 Empowering a Diverse Workforce (3)
    • SOC 350 Practicum (1-8, 3 minimum; must be inequality focused)
    • ESCI 230 Intro to Geographic Information Systems (3)
    • ELEC XXX Other classes as approved by the department chair
