Pathways

UIndy is offering two pathways to achieve Director of Exceptional Learners.

  1. If you already hold a Master’s degree, are an accomplished practitioner and have a minimum of 2-years teaching experience, eighteen credit hours of stand-alone coursework will fulfill the educational and licensure requirements for the Director of Exceptional Learners Program!*
  2. If you do NOT already have a Master’s degree, but have a degree in a content area in exceptional needs, you will need to complete the Master of Arts in Special Education Leadership & Practice (30 credit hours) in order to fulfill the educational requirements to obtain a Director of Exceptional Learners license.

Transfer Credits

Up to 12 graduate credit hours may be transferred from another accredited college or University. To be counted towards the Master’s degree, courses must have been completed within the last 7 years, must have a grade of B or better and must be evaluated for appropriate equivalency.

Licensure for Director of Exceptional Learners

No licensure exam is necessary for the Director of Exceptional Learners Program. Rather, because UIndy’s curriculum is approved by the state, the student must simply complete the coursework with a grade of at least B- in each course and an overall GPA of 3.0+.

Director of Exceptional Learners Program Admission Requirements

The Director of Exceptional Learners Program seeks candidates who demonstrate excellence in teaching and are highly recommended by active principals, superintendents and colleagues for their leadership skills and potential for managing school transformation and fostering community engagement. Candidates must demonstrate through the application process that they are willing to serve as a school leader in diverse school settings and are dedicated to raising student academic achievement.

Admission is based on the following criteria:

  • UIndy online application
  • A bachelor's degree in education and an instructional teaching license from a regionally or nationally accredited institution
  • Official transcripts (undergraduate and/or graduate) with a preferred minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Current resume
  • A recent copy of your teaching license
  • Typed personal statement summarizing your career goals and purpose for applying to the program
