Law enforcement is an exciting and rewarding career. The road to becoming a law enforcement officer involves detailed selection processes. In addition to basic requirements, agencies have standards and expectations that bring the best candidates to the front of the line. The University of Indianapolis Police Department has a unique opportunity to prepare you to be at the top of the hiring list.

Why the Cadet Program?

Today's job market is highly competitive. Becoming a cadet officer with U.I.P.D. will give you the edge needed in Law Enforcement hiring processes. The University of Indianapolis Police Cadet Program is tailored to provide cadets with classroom training, practical training and ILEA course certifications.

Sophomore Year

Once the selection process is completed, cadets will begin the Cadet Academy. Cadets will enter the academy second semester of their sophomore year, and the program will last the entire semester.
The Cadet Academy curriculum consists of the ILEA 40 hour pre-basic program, multi-cultural awareness, field training and state mandated training.

Junior Year

After completion of the Cadet Academy, cadets will begin working with the police department doing various tasks that include:

  • Administrative duties
  • Event Security
  • Special detail security
  • Campus patrol
  • Ride along
  • Academy preparation

After completing their junior year, cadets will enter ILEA. ILEA is the state academy certification required by all police departments. This is a fifteen week basic training.

Senior Year

After completion of ILEA, cadets will be sworn in as certified police officers for the University of Indianapolis Police Department. Officers will have full patrol responsibilities with power to enforce state and local laws.

The University of Indianapolis is 1 of 2 universities in the nation that allow students to work as police officers. This unique opportunity will allow cadets to graduate from the University of Indianapolis with a Bachelor’s Degree, ILEA certification, and a full year of experience as a sworn police officer.
