Housing Communities to Fit You

Developing strong living communities

At the University of Indianapolis, we offer students a wide range of academic and social opportunities. We're here to help you develop connections that will support your academic achievement by creating a culture of connectedness with a unique emphasis on giving back. That’s the Greyhound way; building tomorrow’s future leaders and creating stronger communities.

Below is a list of housing opportunities for first-year students. While not required, we encourage you to explore the list of Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) below and consider applying for up to two organizations that are the best fit for YOU. To apply for an LLC, please complete the necessary steps in the on-campus housing application or email llcs@uindu.edu. You are encouraged to reply no later than May 31.

Living-Learning Communities

Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) are available at UIndy for some first-time students. LLCs are immersive learning experiences designed to bring students with common academic interests or identities together for heightened intellectual and social success. The ultimate goal is to help students mature into the best versions of themselves, both personally and professionally, so they can become leaders at UIndy and beyond.

Students in LLCs are given the platform to create their own communities with other students who share similar passions and interests. Each LLC has its own designated space for communal living in one of the residence halls on UIndy's campus. It's important to note that some LLCs are invitation-only opportunities based on academic criteria set forth by the program or department. All LLCs have a required academic component, creating a "cohort" model where LLC students take courses together throughout the year. UIndy currently offers seven LLCs for students who meet the required criteria:

The Honors LLC is an invitation-only opportunity created to support the Ron and Laura Strain Honors College, which is made up of students who have diverse interests and represent all academic majors on campus. Participating students include athletes, artists, musicians, researchers, officers in student organizations, volunteers, and scholars. Students who live within the Honors LLC will exchange ideas with other outstanding Honors LLC students, who are also working toward graduating with distinction from the University of Indianapolis.

Through participation in the Honors LLC, students will develop their talents, expand their horizons, grow their professional networks, receive support from students reaching for similar academic success, and engage in new experiences. All first-year members of UIndy’s Honors College are invited to live in the Honors LLC, which is located on the fourth floor of Central Hall.

All Honors students will be extended an invitation to apply to be in the Honors LLC, no matter their undergraduate degree. Space in UIndy’s Honors LLC is limited and selection is based on a variety of factors, primarily academic achievement.

The Engineering LLC is designed specifically for those who are interested in the engineering profession and are direct-admit engineering students and pre-engineering majors. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and staff in UIndy’s R.B. Annis School of Engineering and engage in learning outside of the classroom. These shared experiences and workgroups will help students learn how to work together beyond the first year of college and into professional life.

There is an increasing demand for skilled engineers in STEM-related professions, and students will have a specialized living-learning community where they can learn and grow together in this area of study. UIndy is one of the few schools in the region to offer unique and innovative engineering programs that provide students with authentic design opportunities through multidisciplinary DesignSpine experiences.

The Engineering LLC is located on the second floor of Cory Bretz Hall on UIndy’s campus. Students will be paired with roommates who are also members of the Engineering LLC and are pursuing a degree in Engineering.

The Nursing LLC was created specifically for students who are interested in the nursing profession and are declared nursing majors. Designed to prepare nursing students to apply for the clinical phase of the nursing program, the LLC gives students the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and staff in UIndy’s School of Nursing and engage in learning opportunities outside of the classroom through luncheons, programs, field work, and more. The Nursing LLC connects students who have the same passion for helping others while creating lasting friendships!

Students who are part of the Nursing LLC live on the fourth floor of Roberts Hall and are paired with roommates who are also members of the Nursing LLC and pursuing an advanced degree from the University of Indianapolis School of Nursing.

Named after the Swahili word for “unity,” the Umoja Scholars LLC was created to cultivate a sense of belonging for any first-year students who identify as Black, African-American, or within the African diaspora. Students will be invited and admitted based on such criteria.

The Umoja Scholars LLC encourages students to come together, engage with upperclassmen mentors, connect with academic advising resources, and grow personally and professionally. Students who are accepted into the Umoja Scholars LLC will live in Cory Bretz Hall on UIndy’s campus and be paired with roommates who are also members of the Umoja Scholars LLC.

Umoja Scholars have special opportunities to collaborate with faculty and participate in programs related to their identities. This close community creates natural pathways to academic support and success for students who are involved in LLCs.

Students who wish to join the Umoja Scholars LLC are required to enroll in select first-year experience and LLC-related courses, in addition to participating in residential programming initiatives and community activities.

Umoja Scholars LLC applicants must:

  • Remain in good academic standing with the University of Indianapolis

  • Remain enrolled in LLC-related courses

Stonewall Suites Living-Learning Community (LLC) is designed for members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies to connect and support one another while learning about the history and culture of the LGBTQ+ community and pursuing their undergraduate degree.

The Stonewall Suites LLC gives students a safe space to live authentically in a supportive environment. Participation is open to all students enrolled at UIndy who wish to be an ally or part of a safe environment that creates awareness, respect, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community.

Students will enroll in courses that feature LGBTQ+ issues, and participate in extracurricular activities designed to foster connections between LLC members and the wider LGBTQ+ community on campus, locally, and nationally.

Stonewall Suites LLC is located within Roberts Hall on UIndy’s campus. Members will be paired with a roommate who is also a member of the LLC.

Requirements

Stonewall Suites LLC applicants must:

  • Remain in good academic standing with the University of Indianapolis

  • Remain enrolled in LLC courses

  • Remain in good social standing with the University of Indianapolis and Department of Residence Life

  • Participate in LLC-related programs and activities throughout the academic year

  • Develop relationships and communicate with LLC staff and faculty

  • Reside in the student’s assigned living area for the duration of the academic year

  • Abide by the University’s nondiscrimination policy

  • Some LLCs are “invite-only,” and all of them have specific requirements. Be sure to only apply for LLC opportunities where you meet the selection criteria.
  • If you are selected to live in an LLC or Common Interest Community housing, and you accept, your first choice of residence hall from your housing application will be set aside and you will be placed in the pre-selected residence hall for that community.
  • Students who choose to live in an LLC or Common Interest Community housing may not be able to choose their roommate and cannot live with students who are not a part of that housing community.
  • Because LLCs require members to live on-campus, commuter students should not apply for inclusion in LLCs.
  • Selecting an LLC as a first or second choice does not guarantee acceptance to that community. Students not selected for acceptance will be reverted to their original housing application.
  • Applying to an LLC is not required.
  • We encourage you to apply as soon as possible but no later than May 31.

Don't see an LLC that interests you? No problem. UIndy has many other opportunities available for first-year students to help you develop your social network and find your fit at UIndy. These additional programs do not have a housing component and are open to all first-year students including both commuters and students living on-campus. Watch for program overviews and application instructions to arrive in your email inbox on or before April 1.
