About the MA in English Program
Do you love the English language? Are you looking for a way to broaden your horizons and further your career? Then consider a master's program that can supply you with the tools and resources you need to become successful in your endeavors. You may enjoy sitting down and reading a novel, or discussing the merits of Victorian literature, or maybe you just want to learn how to write better. The Master of Arts in English program at UIndy can help you develop those skills that can prepare you for careers in education, writing, publication, literary criticism and more.
Program Length & Format
The Master of Arts in English is 36-credit hour program. It is designed to take students two years to complete, but can be completed in less time, or more slowly for up to five years for part-time students.
This program is one of UIndy's most flexible graduate programs, with the option to pick and choose what you study. Classes meet in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats.
Class times & location
Both daytime and evening classes are available, allowing students to work full-time while attending school. On-campus classes meet once a week for 3 hours or twice a week for 1 ½ hours each session.
Curriculum and electives
Graduate students only have one required course and may build their own curriculum for the remaining courses. UIndy’s MA in English program allows students to focus on writing, literature, and/or teaching, so that they can customize their studies to match their interests and goals. In order to complete the program, students take 36 credit hours total, choosing one of two options.

NOTE: A grade of B- (2.7 on a 4.0 scale) or higher is required in all courses applying toward the Master of Arts in English, and an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for completion.
Thesis & Non-Thesis Options
The thesis option is a good option if you love exploring the English language, researching, and writing your opinions about literature, or have a desire to earn your doctorate in literature. *Choice of creative or literary thesis. The non-thesis option gives you the tools and resources to push your knowledge and skill set to the next level, whether you are a teacher looking to bolster your career or you want to learn how to write for the digital age.
Dual Credit Teaching Certificate
You can complete the requirements for the English Dual Credit Teaching Certificate as part of your MA in English. It prepares high school teachers to teach English 101: Freshman Composition and English 102: Introduction to Literature to high school students for college credit.
When can I start?
Students may begin at the start of any term (spring, fall, summer I or summer II), provided they have completed all admission requirements and have been accepted into the program. The deadline for completed applications for Semester I is July 15. For Semester II admission, the deadline to apply is November 1. Priority consideration will be given to applications submitted by these dates; however, applications submitted after the deadline will be considered for available openings in the program.
MA in English Admission Requirements
The graduate English program at UIndy has two different application deadline dates. If you are interested in applying for Semester I, then your application must be submitted by July 15. If you are interested in starting the program during Semester II, then you need to apply by November 1. Late applications will still be considered, but those turned in before the due date will have priority.
To apply to the program, submit the following:
- Graduate online application
- $30 graduate application fee
- Official transcripts from each university or college attended
- Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores. (You do not have to take and submit GRE scores if your undergraduate grade point average was over a 3.2)
- Three reference letters. At least two must be from academic sources.
- Personal statement that outlines career goals and reasons for applying to the program
- Writing sample
- Example of academic writing or a portfolio of your best creative or professional writing
- At least 10 pages in length
- Academic writing should have a clear thesis supported by evidence from primary sources, incorporate research, and follow appropriate citations
- Creative/professional portfolio should reflect the graduate studies you intend to pursue and demonstrate a critical understanding of the theories, ideas, and genres at play in the work
- International students for whom English is not their first language, and/or who did not attend an English-speaking university must provide one of the following as proof of English proficiency:
- iBT TOEFL - at least 100 (UIndy code R1321)
- IELTS - at least 7
- PTE Academic - at least 55
- Duolingo English - at least 125
- Graduation certificate from approved English as a Second Language program
- We do not accept institutional exams.
- Provide certification of finances (for students who are applying for a visa), showing that you have adequate funds to support yourself during your time of study
- A photocopy of your passport to ensure I-20 information is accurate
