Phylis Lan Lin School of Social Work and Counseling
The Phylis Lan Lin School of Social Work & Counseling offers programs that prepare graduates to professionally and ethically address the social, physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals, groups, and communities.
Social Work
Our social work programs aim to prepare practitioners to meet the needs of evolving city, state, national and global communities, through advocacy by advancing human rights, and promoting social, racial, economic, and environmental justice with special attention to serving vulnerable and oppressed individuals, groups, and communities.
Counseling
UIndy’s counseling programs prepare future clinicians to address the needs of individuals, groups and communities through culturally informed, social justice-oriented, ethical, reflective and effective practice of mental health counseling.
Meet Our Founder, Phylis Lan Lin
Phylis Lan Lin, Ph.D., founded her namesake Department of Social Work at the University of Indianapolis in the 1990s. Together, Dr. Lin and the UIndy faculty, staff and students have forged a collaboration that has become a friendship with the characteristics of what Dr. Lin, in sociological terms, identifies as hallmarks of a “healthy family:” commitment, appreciation, good communication, coping with crisis and stress through good and hard times, and continuous inspiration.
In the summer of 2023, the Phylis Lan Lin Department of Social Work united with the Department of Counseling to form the Phylis Lan Lin School of Social Work & Counseling. Our partnership mirrors the collaborations between counselors and social workers in the field, working together in our communities to address the needs of our time.
