DAISY Awards - Faculty Frequently Asked Questions

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem. The DAISY Foundation (The Foundation) was formed in January, 2000, by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. His widow, Tena (a DAISY Co-founder and Vice President) came up with the acronym.

The purpose of this program is to provide a national recognition program that academic institutions with nursing programs may use to demonstrate appreciation to nursing faculty for their commitment and inspirational influence on their students. The DAISY Foundation hopes that this program will contribute to a positive work environment and encourage nursing faculty to continue teaching future nurses. In creating The DAISY Faculty Award, there were three fundamental elements:

  • A partnership with schools to provide on-going recognition
  • Flexibility so that The DAISY Faculty Award may be tailored to each school’s unique culture and values
  • A turn-key program, with The DAISY Foundation providing most everything you need to implement The DAISY Faculty Award

The work of nursing faculty goes on all year long in classrooms and in clinical settings. You are encouraged to nominate faculty at any time during the academic year. Awards will be presented during the May and December Nursing Recognition programs.

Faculty may be nominated by anyone who comes in contact with them. In the academic setting: faculty peers, students, or administrative staff. In the clinical setting: nurses, patients, providers, nurse leaders, staff, etc.
