Research Fellows Program
Early Research. Real Impact. The Research Fellows program at the University of Indianapolis engages promising undergraduate students in scholarly research during their first two years. This is primarily accomplished through a stipend-supported research experience with a faculty mentor in a field of interest.
Fellows, along with their mentors, decide on a research project that the students begin working on in their first year and continue into their sophomore year. At the end of sophomore year students present the research at events such as Scholars Showcase.
Upon completion of the program, Fellows are encouraged to continue working on an independent research project in their field of interest during their junior and senior years. Some students choose to do this through the Ron and Laura Strain Honors College, while others elect to continue their research through departmental research hours.
Advantages
- Structured support for early research success: Fellows participate in a first-year Research Colloquium course (INTD 150) in their first semester that introduces them to research methods, academic writing, and professional expectations.
- Expanded academic and professional opportunities: Fellows are enrolled in the Strain Honors College where they can receive support to attend professional conferences, gaining early exposure to academic networks and scholarly presentation experiences.
- Stipend support: Fellows are awarded $750 per semester for the two-year program. Additional support for research may be obtained from grants available through the Strain Honors College.
Admission
Research Fellowships are offered to incoming, full-time freshmen seeking a degree program under any college or school at the University of Indianapolis. After the Office of Admissions has established the “distinguished admission” pool for the incoming freshmen class, select students, as determined by the Office of Admissions and the Director of Fellowships, will receive invitations to apply for the program.
Successful applicants will be enrolled in INTD 150 (Research Colloquium) in their first semester, where they will interview potential research mentors. Fellows will begin working with their chosen mentors in their second semester. Continuation in the Research Fellows program is evaluated each semester, based on student interest, as well as faculty mentor input. Fellows will be evaluated based in part on the guidelines in the Research Fellows Agreement document.
