What We Do
The Indiana AHEC Network / MICI AHEC enhances access to quality health care, primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of health care professionals through community/academic educational partnerships. We have four core functions: health careers promotion/pathway programming, community-based education and clinical training, the AHEC Scholars Program, and continuing education for health professionals.

- Cultivate student interest in health careers
- Train students in clinical & community settings
- Recruit students into jobs in underserved areas across Indiana
- Retain a high quality healthcare workforce
How we do it
- Introduce students and adult career seekers to various healthcare career options
- Develop opportunities for future health professionals to receive their clinical training in underserved areas
- Provide continuing education and professional support to health practitioners
- Recruit health professionals to serve in underserved communities
Our goals
- Health Careers Promotion, Preparation & Pipeline Development
Assist in educating students about healthcare careers, supporting students through their education, and then continuing support once students graduate and enter the healthcare workforce. GOAL: MICI AHEC students will practice in the state of Indiana in rural or medically underserved communities. - Community-Based Student Education and Clinical Training Programs
Improve the readiness, willingness, and ability of health professions trainees to serve in primary care, rural and medically-underserved community settings. - Professional Education and Support and Continuing Education Programs
Increase health professionals’ access to training resources that support practice, reduce professional isolation, disseminate best practices, and improve quality of healthcare for medically underserved communities and health disparity populations.
Upcoming Opportunities & Announcements
In Indiana, there are 9 AHEC regional centers that serve Hoosiers throughout the state. The Metropolitan Indianapolis Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (MICI-AHEC) is hosted by the University of Indianapolis through partnership that allows MICI-AHEC to further reach its goals through recruitment, quality programming and community reach. MICI-AHEC moved to the University of Indianapolis in September 2014. Through the years, we have formed a strategic partnership within the University that has enhanced our mission and improves our program implementation.
A healthy Indiana needs healthy communities; and it needs healthcare professionals located in all areas of the state prepared to help educate citizens about health problems and issues and to provide quality service. The Metropolitan Indianapolis Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (MICI-AHEC) plays an important role in providing healthcare professionals who are prepared to meet the needs of these counties: Marion, Johnson, Hancock, Hendricks, Boone, Shelby, Morgan and Hamilton.
AHEC Scholars Program
The Indiana AHEC Scholars Program is a two-year track designed to enhance the practice readiness of health professions students committed to serving rural and medically underserved populations. Open to a wide range of disciplines—including nursing, medicine, and allied health—the program provides a stipend to support students as they develop the specialized expertise needed to bridge healthcare gaps across Indiana. Obtaining these skills and practices in the field allows Scholars to increase knowledge, develop expertise, clarify values and develop their capacity to contribute to communities in need.
