Responsible Offices: Marketing and Information Technology
Effective: October 1, 2024
Policy Statement
All websites, web-based applications and services, and content published online publicly by UIndy must endeavor to comply with best practices and standards as defined by Section 504 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA (“the Standards”) to ensure that electronic information is accessible for people with disabilities. Conformance with these guidelines will help make digital content more user-friendly for all people.
Scope
These standards and procedures apply to all web pages and web-based applications officially representing UIndy publicly and managed by UIndy personnel, including:
- Primary public website
- UIndy WordPress websites/blogs
- Departmental websites
- Websites hosted by vendors on behalf of the University
- Publicly available university content (including documents)
Some information published online publicly prior to 2024 is made available as historical copies or archives of original works and may not fully meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. An accessible web form is provided for those who require additional information about or access to material that is presented with a barrier.
Responsibilities
Each content creator and publisher is responsible for making their own content accessible to the extent possible given the publication tools available to them. Content creators and publishers may include:
- Copywriters and editors of web pages, blogs, and social media content
- Copywriters and editors of documents for web delivery
- Designers of graphics/images for web delivery
- Video creators
- Podcast creators
These individuals are also responsible for reviewing their content annually to maintain ADA compliance.
Individuals responsible for websites that utilize vendor-supplied platforms and tools must work with the vendor to ensure adherence to these standards. The vendor must use WCAG 2.1 AA or newer as their accessibility standard. Vendor-supplied platforms and tools may include:
- Web page templates
- Forms and surveys
- Virtual tours
- Interactive maps
- Embeddable widgets
Some members of the Information Technology and Communications & Marketing departments will have additional accessibility responsibilities based on their University role.
