Drop/Add and Withdrawal
You, as the student, have the responsibility of initiating official withdrawal from a course or from the university and to understand the financial implications that may result. Information regarding UIndy's tuition refund policy can be found on the Office of Student Billing & Payment website.
Drop: A "drop" is withdrawal from a course or courses during the drop/add period (up to the Friday of the first week of classes). Dropped courses do not appear on your academic record. During the drop/add period, you may drop a course or courses: online using the online registration system; in person in the Office of the Registrar; or with your academic advisor by completing a drop form.
Individual Course Withdrawal
A student may withdraw from one or more courses after the drop/add deadline has passed, but before the withdrawal deadline for the term. Please see the academic calendar for the withdrawal deadline for each term. A "withdrawal" from a course or courses must be made in consultation with your academic advisor by completing a drop/add form. An advisor's signature is required for day division students who wish to withdraw from a course. Courses from which you have withdrawn appear on your academic record along with a "W", indicating withdrawal. Withdrawing from courses may have financial aid implications; please consult them before submitting your request.
Complete Withdrawal (All Students)
Any student who wants to withdraw from all enrolled courses after the drop deadline (Friday of the first week of classes) must submit a Complete Withdrawal form. All undergraduate day division complete withdrawals must be initiated in the Phil and Janet Terry Center for Campus Connections, located in Schwitzer Student Center 208. It is the student's responsibility to contact all relevant offices to discuss implications for a complete withdrawal for a given term - Registrar, Office of Student Billing and Payment, Financial Aid, Residence Life, Academic Advising, Athletics (if applicable), Program Director (if applicable).
Once a complete withdrawal is processed, all courses for the enrolled term will appear on an official transcript with a "W", which does not impact GPA. Questions regarding financial aid status or accounting charges should be directed to those offices prior to submission of the Complete Withdrawal form. Please see the academic calendar for the withdrawal deadline for each term. Complete withdrawals will not be processed after the deadline has passed. If you are withdrawing from some but not all of your classes, see the Individual Course Withdrawal information above.
Administrative Withdrawal
The university reserves the right to withdraw a student administratively for excessive absences, disruptive behavior, or extenuating circumstances. Please see the Withdrawal Policies as stated and outlined in the Academic Catalog.
Deadlines for official withdrawal are as follows:
- Semester I or II: Withdrawal permitted up to and including Friday of the 10th week of the semester. No withdrawals are permitted after this deadline.
- Spring Term: Withdrawal permitted up to and including Monday of the second week of Spring Term.
- Eight-Week Courses (Sem I or II): Withdrawal permitted up to and including Friday of the 5th week of the session
- Summer session: Withdrawal permitted up to and including Friday of the 8th week of the term (for 14 week courses) or Friday of the 4th week of the term (for 7 week courses).
- Workshops/Courses with special term dates: Withdrawal permitted up to and including the 60th percent point of the course.
Should you decide to discontinue attending a course or all courses, it is your responsibility to drop or withdraw. Failure to do so will result in you receiving a final grade for the course.
A note on withdrawing from summer session/non-standard session courses
Many courses during the summer term do not follow the standard 14-week or 7-week session. Similarly, many courses during Semester I and Semester II do not follow the standard 16-week or 8-week session. Students wishing to withdraw from non-standard session courses should consult with the Office of the Registrar about the withdrawal deadline.
