Drop/Add and Withdrawal
You, as the student, have the responsibility of initiating official withdrawal from a course or from the university and to understand the financial implications that may result. Information regarding the tuition refund policy at the University of Indianapolis (UIndy) can be found on the Office of Student Billing & Payment Refunds for Students and the Office of Financial Aid Refund Policy.
Dropping a Course
A "drop" is removing a course or courses from a student's schedule during the drop/add period (up to the Friday of the first week of classes). Dropped courses do not appear on your academic record. During the drop/add period, you may drop a course or courses: online using the online registration system or with your academic advisor by completing a drop form.
Students Who Do Not Enroll
New Students
New students who decide not to enroll should provide written notice to the Office of Admissions. This can be done by emailing admissions@uindy.edu or your specific admissions counselor.
Current undergraduate Students
Current undergraduate students who have decided not to return to the University of Indianapolis should follow the steps below:
- Inform your academic advisor that you will not be attending the University of Indianapolis for the upcoming semester.
- Drop your upcoming classes online through UIndy's Online Registration System.
- Contact the Office of Student Billing and Payment at studentbilling@uindy.edu to determine if any more action is required on your student bill. Your tuition charges for the upcoming term should be removed after you drop your classes.
- If you have a housing and/or meal plan, you can cancel these plans using the following steps:
- Visit the Housing Portal (Go to My UIndy and search for "Housing Portal")
- Select Requests
- Select either Housing Cancellation or Lease Appeal Request
- Complete the form, and a staff member will contact you within 2 business days.
- If you are an international student, contact your Principle Designated School Official (PDSO) at internationalservices@
uindy.edu to let them know you will not be returning to UIndy. - If you are a member of any athletic teams, you should inform your coach that you will not be returning.
Current graduate Students
Current graduate students should contact their program advisor to determine the necessary steps when taking a leave of absence or permanently withdrawing from their program.
Individual Course Withdrawal
A student may withdraw from one or more courses after the drop/add deadline has passed, but before the withdrawal deadline for the term. Please see the academic calendar for the withdrawal deadline for each term. A "withdrawal" from a course or courses must be made in consultation with your academic advisor by completing a drop/add form. An advisor's signature is required for undergraduate students who wish to withdraw from a course. Graduate students should consult with their program advisors for withdrawal procedures. Courses from which you have withdrawn appear on your academic record along with a "W", indicating withdrawal. Withdrawing from courses may have financial aid implications; please consult with the Office of Financial Aid before submitting your request.
Complete Withdrawal (All Students)
Any student who wants to withdraw from all enrolled courses after the drop deadline (Friday of the first week of classes) must submit a Complete Withdrawal form. To initiate a complete withdrawal, all students must first contact their academic advisor. Their academic advisor will provide the link to the complete withdrawal form. After completing this form, students will receive an email with their remaining steps to finalize their complete withdrawal.
When determining whether a complete withdrawal is appropriate, it is the student's responsibility to contact all relevant offices to discuss implications for a complete withdrawal for a given term prior to requesting a complete withdrawal. Depending on the student's circumstances, these may include the Registrar's Office, Office of Student Billing and Payment, Office of Financial Aid, Office of Residence Life, Academic Advising, Athletics, Program Director or Christel Dehaan Center for Global Engagement.
Once a complete withdrawal is processed, all courses for the enrolled term will appear on an official transcript with a "W", which does not impact GPA. Questions regarding financial aid status or accounting charges should be directed to those offices prior to submission of the Complete Withdrawal form. Please see the academic calendar for the withdrawal deadline for each term. Complete withdrawals will not be processed after the deadline has passed. If you are withdrawing from some but not all of your classes, see the Individual Course Withdrawal information above.
Administrative Withdrawal
The university reserves the right to withdraw a student administratively for excessive absences, disruptive behavior, or extenuating circumstances. Please see the Withdrawal Policies as stated and outlined in the Academic Catalog.
Deadlines for official withdrawal are as follows:
- Semester I or II: Withdrawal permitted up to and including Friday of the 10th week of the semester. No withdrawals are permitted after this deadline.
- Spring Term: Withdrawal permitted up to and including Monday of the second week of Spring Term.
- Eight-Week Courses (Sem I or II): Withdrawal permitted up to and including Friday of the 5th week of the session
- Summer session: Withdrawal permitted up to and including Friday of the 8th week of the term (for 14 week courses) or Friday of the 4th week of the term (for 7 week courses).
- Workshops/Courses with special term dates: Withdrawal permitted up to and including the 60th percent point of the course.
Should you decide to discontinue attending a course or all courses, it is your responsibility to drop or withdraw. Failure to do so will result in you receiving a final grade for the course.
A note on withdrawing from summer session/non-standard session courses
Many courses during the summer term do not follow the standard 14-week or 7-week session. Similarly, many courses during Semester I and Semester II do not follow the standard 16-week or 8-week session. Students wishing to withdraw from non-standard session courses should consult with the Office of the Registrar at registrar@uindy.edu to determine these withdrawal deadlines.
