About the Graduate Certificate Professional Writing and Editing Program
The program is designed for those who seek to improve their writing, editing, and communication skills for purposes of professional development and career advancement. It places special emphasis on helping students develop communication skills specific to social media platforms and other emerging digital media.
Program Format
The Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing consists of nine (9) credits of required and elective courses offered in both online and face-to-face formats on campus at UIndy.
Curriculum
A grade of B- or higher is required in all courses applying toward the Certificate in Professional Writing and Editing, and an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for successful program completion.

Can I apply this certificate toward other degree programs?
The Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing and Editing is an example of a stackable credential. Students who complete this certificate are one-third of the way towards completing their Master of Arts in English. Students completing the Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing and Editing may also consider pursuing the Certificate in Dual Credit English Instruction and/or the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English Language Learners (TELL).Admission Requirements
To apply to the Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing and Editing program, students must submit:
- A UIndy graduate application
- $30 application fee
- Official transcripts from each university or college attended
- Three reference letters. At least two must be from someone familiar with your writing skills
- A 1 to 2-page personal statement that outlines your reasons for applying to the program
- A writing sample that is 8 to 12 pages in length (can be a combination of 2 to 3 separate documents if needed)
Additional Requirements for International Applicants and Students for Whom English is a Second Language
- Submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 100, or provide an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 7. TOEFL scores should be sent to institution code R1321.
- Provide certification of finances (for students who are applying for a visa), showing that you have adequate funds to support yourself during your time of study
- A photocopy of your passport to ensure I-20 information is accurate
