Mission

The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Administration & Leadership (HCAL) program is designed to meet the needs of professionals who have an interest in working as a leader in an administrative setting of a healthcare facility, or those who may currently work in healthcare but would like to increase or formalize their knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to critically appraise evidence and propose solutions for contemporary challenges in healthcare management.

Program Length & Format

A self-paced program allows students to have flexibility in scheduling. The program can be completed within three semesters, but you have up to three years to complete all your courses.

Course Descriptions

All required courses are 8-week, online courses.

  • HSCI 522 - Inclusive Leadership & Personal Development (3 credits)
    The HSCI 522 course integrates contemporary leadership theory with practical skill development, emphasizing inclusive leadership approaches for today's diverse organizational environments. Students will examine foundational and emerging leadership frameworks while developing their own authentic leadership plan through reflection and practical application.
  • MPH 520 - Health Systems Management (3 credits)

    The MPH 520 course provides students with an understanding of the core components of a health system, management and administration of health systems, and where public health fits within the system. Topics include health system infrastructure, health system management and administration, health policy overview, role of health and other policies in health disparities, related reforms of policy, international comparisons of health systems and policies, and population health indicators. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing the reciprocal relationships between public health practitioners, the health policies, and systems within which they practice, and related health disparities.

    NOTE: Students who matriculate into this program with previous academic credit and/or professional experience in healthcare administration may be eligible to take an elective in lieu of this course.

Students must also select two of the following courses:

  • HCA 515 - Healthcare Accounting & Finance (3 credits)
    The HCA 515 course offers an introduction to the analytical techniques to the agency’s investment, financing, and dividend decisions. The course will have a focus on the healthcare industry, particularly long-term care and home and community-based service agencies. It will address financial considerations unique to healthcare, including third-party payers, civil monetary penalty funds, and reimbursement policies through the Affordable Care Act.
  • HCA 550 - Managing Quality in Healthcare (3 credits)
    The HCA 550 course applies principles of quality improvement processes across stages of planning, development, implementation/execution, monitoring, and evaluation to the long term care and community-based environment. Students will learn how to develop, track, and report on quality improvement processes consistent with regulatory requirements within the long term care or community-based care setting.
  • HCA 555 - Federal Regulatory Standards in Healthcare (3 credits)
    The HCA 555 course provides an overview of the federal regulations that apply to health facilities and agencies, including LTC, Residential Care, and Home and Community Based Services. The course focuses on reviewing regulations and competence to write policies and procedures to maintain compliance. Students will develop skills to manage the survey and inspection processes, including the maintenance of staff training, quality monitoring, and quality improvement systems.

Graduate Certificate in HCAL Admissions Requirements

Programs within the Interprofessional Health and Aging Studies Department utilize a holistic approach to applicant review. We consider all aspects of the application, not just academic history.

  • A completed online application
  • $25 application fee for graduate programs
  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Official transcripts for your highest degree earned from a regionally accredited institution, from the conferring university or an electronic service (such as Parchment or Student Clearinghouse), demonstrating a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • A personal statement detailing your interest in the program and your career goals.

when can I start?

Students may begin the certificate program at the start of any semester: Fall, Winter, or Summer.

  • August Start: The application deadline is August 1
  • January Start: The application deadline is December 1
  • May Start: The application deadline is April 1
